9 Recent Hospital Transactions and Partnerships

The following hospital mergers, acquisitions and general transactions took place within the past week, beginning with the most recent.

1. Cadence, Rockford Health Systems Call Off Merger
Two prominent health systems located throughout the northern and western suburbs of Chicago — Winfield, Ill.-based Cadence Health and Rockford (Ill.) Health System — ended merger discussions.

2. LSU Bogalusa Medical Center to Merge With Our Lady Health System
Bogalusa (La.) Medical Center, part of Baton Rouge-based Louisiana State University Health Care Services Division, announced it will become Our Lady of the Angels Hospital under a partnership agreement with the Franciscan Missionaries of Our Lady Health System, also based in Baton Rouge.

3. Atlantic Health System to Assume Ownership of Hackettstown Regional Medical Center
Atlantic Health System, based in Morristown, N.J., agreed to acquire Hackettstown (N.J.) Regional Medical Center from Gaithersburg, Md.-based Adventist HealthCare.

4. Carilion Clinic Sells Bedford Memorial Hospital to Centra Health
Carilion Clinic, based in Roanoke, Va., decided to transfer full ownership of Bedford (Va.) Memorial Hospital and its Oakwood Health and Rehabilitation Center to Lynchburg, Va.-based Centra Health.

5. United Kingdom Orders HCA to Sell 2 London Hospitals
The United Kingdom's Competition Commission issued an order for Hospital Corporation of America to sell two of its hospitals in London due to a lack of competition.

6. Oconee Medical Center to Explore Transaction With Greenville Health System
Oconee Medical Center, a hospital with 169 licensed beds in Seneca, S.C., signed a memorandum of understanding to explore an affiliation with Greenville (S.C.) Health System.

7. Metropolitan Hospital of Miami Sold Again
Metropolitan Hospital of Miami is being sold for the second time in seven years. Gene Marini, the hospital's CEO, wrote in a memo to employees the hospital is in a sale process and has struck an agreement with a buyer, although the sale price and the identity of the buyer weren't disclosed.

8. Alice Peck Day Health Systems Pursues Affiliation With Dartmouth-Hitchcock
Alice Peck Day Health Systems in Lebanon, N.H., formally entered affiliation discussions with Dartmouth-Hitchcock, also based in Lebanon.

9. CHS Completes HMA Acquisition
After several months of negotiations and fine-tuning, Franklin, Tenn.-based Community Health Systems closed on its acquisition of Health Management Associates in Naples, Fla.
