22 hospital transactions and partnerships in November

The following hospital mergers, acquisitions and general transactions took place or were announced in November, beginning with the most recent.

1. HealthSouth to acquire Encompass Home Health and Hospice for $750M
Birmingham, Ala.-based HealthSouth, an inpatient rehabilitation hospital operator, signed a definitive agreement to acquire EHHI Holdings, which owns Dallas-based Encompass Home Health and Hospice, for $750 million.

2. Huntsville Hospital Health System announces affiliation with Curae Health
Huntsville (Ala.) Hospital Health System will join Curae Health, a new nonprofit health system that will include three hospitals in northwest Alabama, as part of a strategic affiliation agreement signed by both parties.

3. EvergreenHealth and Valley General Hospital commissioners approve final phase of alliance agreement
Monroe, Wash.-based Valley General Hospital will join EvergreenHealth as part of the third and final phase of an alliance agreement approved by the boards of commissioners at both organizations.

4. Prime Healthcare to acquire St. Joseph Mercy Port Huron
Ann Arbor, Mich.-based Saint Joseph Mercy Health System — a member of Livonia, Mich.-based Trinity Health — entered into a definitive agreement to sell 164-bed St. Joseph Mercy Port Huron (Mich.) hospital to Ontario, Calif.-based for-profit hospital operator Prime Healthcare Services.

5. UC Irvine Health, Corona Regional Medical Center form affiliation
UC Irvine Health in Orange, Calif., and Corona (Calif.) Regional Medical Center — a subsidiary of King of Prussia, Pa.-based Universal Health Services — entered into an affiliation agreement to expand access to specialty healthcare services in Corona and its surrounding communities.

6. CHS to sell Dallas Regional Medical Center to Prime Healthcare
Franklin, Tenn.-based Community Health Systems signed a definitive agreement to sell DallasRegionalMedicalCenter in Mesquite, Texas, and its related outpatient services to Ontario, Calif.-based Prime Healthcare Services.

7. Banner Health to acquire UA Health Network in January
The Tucson-based University of Arizona Health Network merger with Phoenix-based Banner Health is set to close on Jan. 31, 2015, making Banner the state's largest private employer.

8. Sound Physicians to nearly double in size with Cogent Healthcare acquisition
Sound Physicians, a Tacoma, Wash.-based provider of hospitalist and post-acute physician care, announced it will now serve 80 percent more hospitals through the acquisition of Brentwood, Tenn.-based Cogent Healthcare.

9. Allegheny Health to close joint venture deal to grow hospice, home health network
Pittsburgh-based Allegheny Health Network partnered with Celtic Healthcare in Mars, Pa., to create a for-profit hospice and home health network.

10. Kindred to acquire Centerre Healthcare for $195M
Louisville, Ky.-based post-acute services provider Kindred Healthcare signed a definitive merger agreement to acquire Centerre Healthcare — an operator of inpatient rehabilitation hospitals — for approximately $195 million.

11. IASIS Healthcare signs definitive agreement to sell North Vista Hospital
Franklin, Tenn.-based IASIS Healthcare signed a definitive agreement to sell 177-bed NorthVistaHospital in Las Vegas to Ontario, Calif.-based Prime Healthcare Services.

12. Kennedy Health System, RadNet launch diagnostic imaging network
Kennedy Health System in southern New Jersey and Los Angeles-based RadNet announced the launch of Garden State Radiology Network, a medical imaging joint venture.

13. CHS to sell Riverview Regional Medical Center to Prime Healthcare
Franklin, Tenn.-based Community Health Systems signed a definitive agreement to sell substantially all of the assets of RiverviewRegionalMedicalCenter in Gadsden, Ala., and its related outpatient services to Ontario, Calif.-based Prime Healthcare Services.

14. Bert Fish Medical Center in exclusive partnership talks with Florida Hospital
The board that oversees BertFishMedicalCenter in New Smyrna Beach, Fla., voted to only engage in partnership discussions with FloridaHospital in Tampa.

15. Sponsorship of Sylvania Franciscan Health transferred to CHI
The sponsorship of Toledo, Ohio-based Sylvania Franciscan Health was completely transferred from the Sisters of St. Francis of Sylvania (Ohio) to Englewood, Colo.-based Catholic Health Initiatives.

16. SwedishAmerican Health System, UW Health sign definitive merger agreement
SwedishAmerican Health System, a two-hospital system in Rockford, Ill., and University of Wisconsin Health in Madison signed a definitive agreement to merge.

17. Centura Health, DaVita HealthCare Partners form joint venture
Englewood, Colo.-based Centura Health and DaVita HealthCare Partners in Denver announced they are forming a joint venture with an aim of increasing care coordination and lowering healthcare costs for patients in Colorado and Kansas.

18. Phelps Memorial Hospital Center to join North Shore-LIJ Health System
PhelpsMemorialHospital in Sleepy Hollow, N.Y., signed an agreement to become part of Great Neck, N.Y.-based North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System.

19. HCA West Florida finalizes lease of Citrus Memorial Hospital
The Citrus County Hospital Board voted to allow Inverness, Fla.-based CitrusMemorialHospital to join Tampa-based HCA West Florida under a 50-year lease.

20. Community Health Systems acquires Gaffney Medical Center
A subsidiary of Franklin, Tenn.-based Community Health Systems acquired operational control of 125-bed Gaffney (S.C.) MedicalCenter.

21. Cancer Care of Central Pennsylvania to join Geisinger Cancer Institute
Danville, Pa.-based Geisinger Cancer Institute and Lewisburg, Pa.-based Cancer Care of Central Pennsylvania announced an agreement in which Cancer Care of Central Pennsylvania will become party of the Geisinger family, effective Dec. 1.

22. Adventist Midwest Health, Alexian Brothers partner to provide coordinated care
Hinsdale, Ill.-based Adventist Midwest Health and Arlington Heights, Ill.-based Alexian Brothers Health System, part of St. Louis-based Ascension Health, signed a definitive agreement to form an integrated healthcare system.
