2 South Carolina hospitals may close later this year

Marlboro Park Hospital, a 102-bed community healthcare provider in Bennettsville, S.C., and Chesterfield General Hospital, a 59-bed community healthcare provider in Cheraw, S.C., may close later this year, according to The Post and Courier.

If the owner of the buildings, Alabama-based Medical Properties Trust, does not find a new operator by April 30, then 300 employees will lose their jobs, according to the report.

Wendy Wagner, a spokeswoman for Marlboro and Chesterfield, told The Post and Courier that proposals to take over operations of Marlboro were taken from four possible entities earlier this month.

The hospitals, which, the report states, were placed on South Carolina's endangered hospital list last year, are currently run by Franklin, Tenn.-based Community Health Systems.

According to the report, Community Health Systems is not renewing its operating lease.
