The following healthcare mergers, acquisitions, partnerships and general transactions took place or were announced during the past week.
1. CHI Memorial to acquire Georgia hospital
CHI Memorial in Chattanooga, Tenn., part of Englewood, Colo.-based Catholic Health Initiatives, signed a definitive agreement to acquire Cornerstone Medical Center in Fort Oglethorpe, Ga., formerly known as Hutcheson Medical Center.
2. Planned Parenthood purchases South Carolina women's hospital
Planned Parenthood recently purchased Charleston (S.C.) Women's Medical Center and plans to offer elective abortions at the facility once it reopens "sometime in December."
3. McLaren Health Care to integrate Huron Medical Center
The board of trustees of Bad Axe, Mich.-based Huron Medical Center said Nov. 29 the hospital will exclusively pursue a letter of intent to integrate with Grand Blanc, Mich.-based McLaren Health Care.
4. BJC HealthCare petitions to become sole owner of 2 Illinois hospitals
St. Louis-based BJC HealthCare is seeking total ownership of two Illinois hospitals the health system acquired through a merger in 2016.
5. Virginia community's sole medical facility set to close in December
The community of Big Island, Va., is looking for ways to prevent their only medical facility from shuttering at the end of December.
6. Prospect, Brown University discuss joining forces to acquire Care New England
Los Angeles-based Prospect Medical Holdings and Providence, R.I.-based Brown University are reportedly in discussions to jointly purchase Care New England, also in Providence.
7. State OKs $12.2M sale of Meadowlands Hospital Medical Center
The New Jersey Department of Health State Health Planning Board approved the sale of Secaucus, N.J.-based Meadowlands Hospital Medical Center to a New York developer for $12.2 million.
8. UT Health San Antonio, MD Anderson partnership set to take effect in February
University of Texas Health San Antonio President William Henrich, MD, announced Nov. 28 the hospital's partnership with Houston-based MD Anderson Cancer Center will "go live" in February.
9. Rite Aid transfers 97 stores to Walgreens during first phase of asset sale
Camp Hill, Pa.-based Rite Aid completed the pilot closing and first phase of its asset sale to Deerfield, Ill.-based Walgreens Boots Alliance Nov. 27.
10. Texas Medical Center partners with J&J to spur medical device innovation
Houston-based Texas Medical Center partnered with Johnson & Johnson on a 25,500-square-foot facility at the hospital designed to spur innovation in the medical device field, J&J announced Nov. 8.
11. UAB Health System discusses potential agreement to prevent rural hospital closure
Birmingham, Ala.-based UAB Health System is discussing a potential management agreement to prevent a 60-year-old rural hospital — J. Paul Jones Hospital in Camden, Ala. — from closing.
