10 Recent Hospital Transactions and Partnerships

The following hospital mergers, acquisitions and general transactions took place within the past week, beginning with the most recent.

1. St. Elizabeth, Faxton St. Luke's Move Forward With Affiliation
Faxton St. Luke’s Healthcare and St. Elizabeth Medical Center, both based in Utica, N.Y., moved closer to an affiliation by submitting a certificate of need application to the New York State Department of Health.

2. Somerset Hospital Signs Joint Venture LOI With Conemaugh Health System
The board of directors at Somerset (Pa.) Hospital signed a nonbinding letter of intent to create a collaborative partnership with Conemaugh Health System, a three-hospital system based in Johnstown, Pa.

3. UnityPoint Health, Meriter Health Services Agree to Affiliation
Meriter Health Services in Madison, Wis., agreed to become an affiliate of West Des Moines, Iowa-based UnityPoint Health.

4. CHS: Federal Regulators Extending Review Process of HMA Acquisition
The Federal Trade Commission and Securities and Exchange Commission said they are delving further into the pending transaction between Franklin, Tenn.-based Community Health Systems and Naples, Fla.-based Health Management Associates, but CHS said it still expects the deal will close early next year.

5. Partners, Hallmark Health Sign Affiliation Deal
Partners HealthCare in Boston and Hallmark Health System in Melrose, Mass., signed a memorandum of understanding to create a new regional affiliation centered around coordinated care and population health.

6. College Health Enterprises Buys Pacific Hospital
Santa Fe Springs, Calif.-based College Health Enterprises purchased Pacific Hospital of Long Beach (Calif.), now named College Hospital of Long Beach.

7. RWJ University Hospital, Somerset Medical Center Reach Definitive Merger Deal
Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, N.J., and Somerset Medical Center in Somerville, N.J., signed a definitive merger agreement.

8. HMA Sells Lone Hospital in West Virginia
Health Management Associates, based in Naples, Fla., signed a definitive agreement with Lexington, Ky.-based Appalachian Regional Healthcare to sell Williamson (W.Va.) Memorial Hospital, Health Management's only hospital in West Virginia.

9. Affiliation Between Dartmouth-Hitchcock, New London Hospital Finalized
Effective Oct. 1, New London (N.H.) Hospital became an affiliate of Lebanon, N.H.-based Dartmouth-Hitchcock.

10. Lehigh Valley Health Network to Acquire Westfield Hospital
Executives at Lehigh Valley Health Network and Westfield Hospital, both in Allentown, Pa., signed an asset purchase agreement, in which LVHN will buy Westfield Hospital and convert it into an orthopedic center.
