Richmond University Medical Center in Staten Island, N.Y., is exploring affiliation with other hospital systems, according to a Staten Island Advance report.
RUMC, a stand-alone facility, is asking other health systems to complete and submit an RFP, which has been sent to every hospital system in New York as well as other systems outside the state.
Since breaking away from its parent, Saint Vincent Catholic Medical Centers, which closed in 2010 due to bankruptcy, RUMC has regained financial stability but wants to increase services and strengthen finances.
Officials say the hospital will need capital to buy equipment, upgrade infrastructure, maintain nurse-to-patient ratios and expand community services and sub-specialty programs. RUMC also faces rising labor costs and potentially significant revenue losses due to the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.
The hospital is currently installing a multi-million dollar ambulatory surgery and urgent care center in Bloomfield, N.Y.
