Physicians, Others Protest North Carolina Hospital's Recommendation to Merge With For-Profit Operator

Physicians and community members recently protested the recommended merger of Beaufort County Medical Center in Washington, N.C., with Community Health Systems, according to a Washington Daily News report.

The medical center's board approved a merger with the for-profit hospital operator over non-profit University Health Systems of Eastern Carolina, despite a recommendation from the medical staff to partner with UHS.

The hospital's former chief of staff, Tom Pender, MD, said at the rally that the hospital's "agenda is anti-quality healthcare" for the county, according to the report.

The Beaufort County Board of Commissioners will make the final decision about the merger and have not yet voted on the proposal.
