Bloomsburg (Pa.) Health has signed a non-binding letter of intent to explore a merger with Danville, Pa.-based Geisinger Health System, according to a Daily Item report.
Geisinger physicians currently serve as consulting staff at Bloomsburg and eight Geisinger physicians have full medical staff privileges at Bloomsburg. Geisinger also provides laboratory and clinical engineering services for Bloomsburg; a merger would expand and formalize the relationship between the two systems, according to the report.
Bloomsburg Health System President and CEO Regis P. Cabonor said the merger comes as the small hospital faces growing financial pressures. "We have been very open with our patients, employees, physicians and the community about looking to partner with a larger health system," Mr. Cabonor said in the report. "Our goal is to ensure that quality, affordable and accessible healthcare services continue in the Bloomsburg Hospital service area, and we are pleased to explore this possibility with Geisinger."
