North Carolina's Beaufort Regional Signs Letter of Intent With University Health Systems

The board of Beaufort Regional Health System in Washington, N.C., has signed a letter of intent with Greenville, N.C.-based University Health Systems of Eastern Carolina, according to a Washington Daily News report.

The hospital and non-profit health system will now undergo due diligence.

As part of the agreement, UHS will manage BRHS and has pledged $21 million in capital improvements in the first five years of potential 30-year lease. The $30 million, 30-year lease agreement still needs to be approved by Beaufort County commissioners as the county owns the facility.

The deal ends much turmoil for the health system, as the board previously approved a merger with for-profit Community Health Systems despite a recommendation by the medical staff to move forward with UHS. Medical and community leaders protested the decision, and CHS eventually withdrew its offer.
