New York's Upstate Medical University to Explore Acquisition of Community General Hospital

The board of trustees of the State University of New York has voted to allow SUNY Upstate Medical University, a 409-bed academic medical center in Syracuse, N.Y., to explore an acquisition of Community General Hospital, also in Syracuse, according to a report by the Post-Standard.

The merger of the two facilities would create the largest hospital in central New York state in terms of inpatient market share, according to the report.

CGH had originally explored an affiliation or merger with Crouse Hospital in Syracuse, but after talks died, UMU and CGH began exploring a strategic affilation.

An acquisition by UMU of the ailing CGH would likely require funds from the state, although most of it could be borrowed, according to the report.
