St. Joseph's Hospital and Arnot Ogden Medical Center, both located in Elmira, N.Y., have signed a letter of intent to explore a merger, according to a report by the Star Gazette.
Under the proposed agreement, both hospitals will retain their own identities, but operations will be consolidated under a new parent company, with a single board of directors, according to the report.
The Berger Commission, a state panel aimed at streamlining healthcare in New York, recommended the two hospitals explore a partnership in 2006. The hospitals were unable, however, to reach an agreement.
Last year, St. Joseph's explored a merger with d Guthrie Healthcare System in Sayre, Pa., but called off the deal due to uncertainties about reimbursement and the economic climate.
