Duke and LifePoint Partner, Announce First Acquisition

Duke University Health System, based Durham, N.C., is partnering with LifePoint Hospitals, a for-profit hospital manager based in Nashville, Tenn., to buy and run community hospitals in North Carolina, according to a release from Duke.

Duke and LifePoint announced their first deal, to run 102-bed Maria Parham Medical Center in Henderson, N.C. Maria Parham would retain 20 percent ownership and the Duke-LifePoint joint venture would control 80 percent. Proceeds from the transaction would repay Maria Parham's debt, and about $30 million would go into a foundation for new community programs and services.

LifePoint operates 52 hospitals in 17 states but none up to now in North Carolina. A Duke official said Duke and LifePoint will apply "proven operational strategies that are more important than ever in the era of healthcare reform."
