Three struggling hospitals in Brooklyn are finalizing a de facto merger proposal that could be submitted to state officials as early as this week, according to a Crain's New York report.
Interfaith Medical Center, Wyckoff Heights Medical Center and Brooklyn Hospital Center have proposed a plan calling for a "northern Brooklyn healthcare alliance," which may include a major restructuring, closure or repurposing of at least one facility. The hospitals say the purpose of the alliance is to strengthen their bottom lines and command higher reimbursement under Medicaid reforms.
According to the report, the proposal could lead to the formation of an accountable care organization. Hospital officials have said a consultant will be hired to construct a more detailed plan for the three hospitals once the alliance has formalized its request. Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center was asked to join the group, but has declined the offer for the time being, according to the report.
