10 Things to Know About University of California Irvine Medical Center

The University of California Irvine Medical Center in Orange is a healthcare beacon in Orange County, boasting some of the most advanced diagnostic and treatment facilities in the state and country.

Here are 10 things to know about UC Irvine Medical Center, according to its website.

1. Terry Belmont has served as CEO of UC Irvine Medical Center since December 2009. He was the interim CEO from March 2009, and he also has experience as CEO of Long Beach (Calif.) Memorial Medical Center and Miller Children's Hospital.

2. Morris Frieling is UC Irvine Medical Center's CFO and oversees revenue audit, contracting, patient financial services and several other sectors within the hospital's finances.

3. UC Irvine Medical Center, which is the teaching facility of the UC Irvine School of Medicine, has 422 beds. It offers several unique acute- and general-care services in the region, such as a Level I Trauma Center and a National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center. UC Irvine Medical Center also opened UC Irvine Douglas Hospital in 2009 as a facility for modern research and physician training.

4. The hospital has more than 3,500 employees and more than 450 specialty and primary care physicians.

5. Last year, UC Irvine Medical Center recorded approximately $2.54 billion in total revenue and $33.6 million in net income, which resulted in a 1.3 percent profit margin, according to the American Hospital Directory.

6. UC Irvine Medical Center performed 5,145 inpatient and 5,253 outpatient surgeries last year, and the emergency department sees almost 35,000 patients annually.

7. According to U.S. News & World Report, UC Irvine Medical Center and its school of medicine are among the top 50 U.S. medical schools for research. The academic medical center was also ranked nationally in four specialties last year — gynecology, urology, cancer and nephrology.

8. UC Irvine Medical Center's history traces back to 1965, although it officially became part of UC Irvine in 1976.

9. As a well-established research hospital, UC Irvine Medical Center scientists and physicians have published several medical research milestones. For example, stem cell researcher Hans Keirstead, PhD, was the first person in the world to differentiate embryonic stem cells to repair damaged tissue in spinal cord injuries.

10. Within Orange County, UC Irvine Medical Center has the only Level I Trauma Center, the only high-risk perinatal and neonatal program center and the only burn center.
