5. In 2011, the hospital had 14,614 patient discharges, 54,804 emergency department visits, 50,240 outpatient visits, 6,298 outpatient surgeries and 3,788 inpatient surgeries, according to its website.

6. In 2011, the hospital recorded $1.23 billion in gross charges and $9.25 million in net income, according to the American Hospital Directory.

7. The hospital was founded in 1926.

8. The Miriam Hospital's Stroke Center received a 2012 Gold Plus Performance Achievement Award from the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association. This is the association's highest honor for stroke care.

9. The Miriam Hospital earned the elite Gold Seal of Approval from The Joint Commission for Primary Stroke Centers, a national honor awarded to the country's top stroke programs. The Miriam, which was the first hospital in Rhode Island to be certified as a Primary Stroke Center, holds the distinction as the only facility in the state to be certified four times.

10. The hospital is one of 51 hospitals with the lowest 30-day mortality rates from July 2008 to June 2011 for heart attack patients, according to data from CMS' Hospital Compare database.
