UT Dell Medical School to establish neuroscience center with $50M gift

The University of Texas at Austin Dell Medical School will establish a neurology clinic and Houston-based MD Anderson Cancer Center will advance cancer research with a combined gift of $75 million from the Mulva Family Foundation.

James and Miriam Mulva, who have consistently supported UT Austin and MD Anderson, gave the gift through the Mulva Family Foundation. Mr. Mulva, a UT Austin alumnus, chairs the MD Anderson board of visitors. He is past chairman and CEO of ConocoPhillips. Ms. Mulva is an alumna of De Pere, Wis.-based St. Norbert College.

"Once again, Jim and Miriam Mulva have made an extraordinary investment in The University of Texas that will enable UT Austin to build a world-class clinical care program for the treatment of neurological disorders and UT MD Anderson to accelerate discoveries in cancer research," UT System Chancellor William McRaven said in a statement announcing the donation. "The Mulvas' generosity is destined to bring great promise and hope to families who experience the devastating effects of these diseases, and The University of Texas System is eternally grateful to the Mulvas for entrusting us with their vision."

Two thirds of the gift — $50 million — will go toward establishing the Mulva Clinic for the Neurosciences, which will put an emphasis on Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, stroke and bipolar disorder. The remaining $25 million will be divided equally between melanoma and prostate cancer research being conducted by Patrick Hwu, MD, chair of MD Anderson's melanoma medical oncology department, and Christopher Logothetis, MD, chair of genitourinary medical oncology department.
