Two Pittsburgh-area hospitals and Western Pennsylvania's largest health insurer are expected to announce today a three-year pilot program, the Pittsburgh Accountable Care Network, according to a Pittsburgh Tribune-Review report.
Monongahela (Pa.) Valley Hospital, Jefferson Regional Medical Center in Pittsburgh and health insurer Highmark will work together as an accountable care organization. The pilot program was organized by nonprofit Pittsburgh Regional Health Initiative and partially funded by a $296,948 grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.
The pilot program will aim to reduce readmissions of patients with chronic obstructive lung, congestive heart and coronary artery diseases. Jeff Goldsmith, a public health sciences professor at the University of Virginia, called the pilot a "way better idea" than a typical ACO because it focuses on specific chronic disease readmissions, according to the report.
