Boston-based Steward Health Care System expanded its physician network by 14 percent in 2011, which totaled more than 1,800 affiliated physicians, according to a report (pdf) from the Massachusetts attorney general's office.
The report said the ramifications of Steward's growing physician base "are not yet fully apparent," though the state indicated increased acquisitions of physician practices may impact Steward's relationships with health insurers.
Steward has rapidly affiliated with several physician groups over the past year and at the expense of other Boston healthcare giants. In September 2012, the for-profit hospital operator drew away Hawthorn Medical Associates from Partners HealthCare. In November 2011, Steward affiliated with 150 physicians who were part of Whittier Independent Practice Association, which is part of Beth Israel Deaconess.
