In a little over six months, the number of accountable care organizations nationwide has expanded to 221, which represents a 38 percent increase from November 2011, according to a June 2012 Leavitt Partners white paper.
With the addition of 61 ACOs since Leavitt Partners' most recent November 2011 analysis, ACOs are now spread across 45 states and the District of Columbia. A majority of ACOs are in the private sector; commercial ACOs outnumber government ACOs by a factor of four to one. Moreover, most organizations are hospital-led and established in large metropolitan regions.
The white paper includes a map showing where ACOs are located across the country as well as a map with a breakdown of ACO distribution by hospital referral region.
