Recruiting Statistics Show More Physicians Seeking Hospital Employment

Healthcare leaders believe the percentage of physicians on hospitals' active staffs who are employed will increase from 10 percent today to 25 percent by 2013, according to a Deloitte white paper.

Physicians are increasingly seeking hospitals as well, evidenced by recruiting statistics from 2006 compared to 2009. In 2006, hospitals comprised only 23 percent of medical settings for search assignments but made up 45 percent in 2009. Also, group practice search assignments decreased from 40 percent in 2006 to 29 percent in 2009.

Traditional employment doesn't work for physicians, according to the white paper, which also suggests hospitals require meaningful participation in the organization's leadership in exam rooms or board rooms. The authors also encourage hospitals to incorporate lessons learned in the 1980s/1990s when hospitals employed physicians then divested. Recalling these lessons will help hospitals avoid repeating history.
