Practice management companies are increasingly acquiring independent physician groups, especially practices that specialize in inpatient specialties, such as maternal and fetal medicine and emergency medicine, according to a report by American Medical News.
In just the first six months of this year, Mednax acquired seven practices, TeamHealth acquired or affiliated with three groups and hospitalist firm IPC acquired four practices, according to the report.
These companies are joining with hospitals in a growing trend of acquiring practices that is only expected to increase in the coming years. With increasing regulation and declining reimbursement, many physicians are seeking opportunities to join these groups or health systems in order to allow their physicians to focus more on medical care, according to the report.
Physicians interested in selling their practices should be aware, however, that many practice management firms will not guarantee employment after an acquisition, according to the report.
