Physicians Resign in Protest Over Management at MedWest, Carolinas HealthCare

A group of physicians fed up with a lack of management and recent mergers are leaving MedWest in North Carolina, according to a report in The Macon County News.

In total, eight physicians in several hospitals included in the MedWest system are leaving One of those physicians is Bob Adams, MD, chief hospitalist at MedWest-Harris,who has been with the system for 36 years.

"MedWest has failed financially and operationally," Dr. Adams said. "That it has failed financially is obvious."

His woes started when Carolinas HealthCare System took over management of Haywood Regional Medical Center and WestCare in January 2010, under an affiliation known as MedWest. Several other physicians in the MedWest network resigned over similar frustration with management.

Dr. Adams brought his complaints to Jackson County's Board of Commissioners — MedWest-Harris is in Jackson County — and John Young, a vice-president of Carolinas HealthCare, responded in a statement.

"Carolinas HealthCare System does not agree with many of the assertions and opinions made by a local physician in his presentation to the Jackson County Board of Commissioners," Mr. Young said. "Carolinas HealthCare System remains committed to working with small rural hospitals to provide local access to quality care while also operating within a challenging business environment."
