More than 97 percent of shareholders of Madison, Wis.-based multispecialty physician group Dean Health Systems voted in favor of merging with St. Louis-based Catholic hospital system SSM Health Care.
The two organizations signed a letter of intent last month to explore the transaction, in which Dean's 500 physicians, more than 60 clinics and its subsidiaries — including a joint venture, 300,000-person health plan with SSM and a telemedicine firm — would become fully owned by SSM, which owns seven hospitals in central and southern Wisconsin and others across the Midwest.
Financial details were not disclosed. The organizations announced they expected the deal to close by late summer this year, pending regulatory approval.
