Pennsylvania hospital gets surgical residency program extension

The accreditation for Upland, Pa.-based Crozer-Chester Medical Center's surgical residency program has been extended after the ACGME previously announced it had been removed and that the program needed to close by Jan. 12.

With 15 residential positions filled, the program went from "withdrawal of accreditation under special circumstances" to "withdrawal of accreditation under special circumstances, under appeal" on ACGME's website

The accreditation of a sponsoring institution or program that is "under appeal" may remain active until the ACGME makes their final accreditation status decision, according to the ACGME's policies and procedures list.

"We are glad the ACGME agreed to keep our Surgery Residency Program open until we have the opportunity to receive additional information and submit our appeal," Tony Esposito, CEO of Upland-based Crozer Health, told Becker's in a statement.

A letter regarding the program's status is expected within 60 days, a spokesperson for Crozer told Becker's in a statement.
