Patients were evacuated and several transported to other hospitals after a car fire broke out in a parking garage at Mass General Waltham (Mass.), ABC affiliate WCVB reported Dec. 11.
An Audi sedan caught fire in the basement of the patient parking garage around 11 a.m. The resulting smoke and carbon monoxide moved up into the ambulatory care center, Waltham Fire Chief Andrew Mullin said in the report. The fire alarm was triggered, resulting in a mass evacuation.
"Two people were transported, one who was in surgery, one person with smoke inhalation, two other patients who were here for doctors' appointments were transported as a precaution," Mr. Mullin said.
Other patients were evacuated to the nearby Floor & Decor and Costco to stay warm.
"The area of the building nearest to the incident was briefly evacuated, and no major injuries have been reported," Mass General Brigham said in a statement to WCVB. "Delays related to this incident have resulted in some patient appointments being rescheduled."
By afternoon, patients and staff were able to resume operations, ABC reported. The fire, which started in the car's engine compartment, was ruled an accident.
