Orlando (Fla.) Health published a free reference guide April 27 documenting the staff's experience during and after the June 2016 Pulse nightclub shooting in Orlando, during which 49 people were killed and 53 were wounded, according the Orlando Sentinel.
The Disaster Response Project is a free online resource Orlando Health has been developing for more than a year after hospitals and health systems nationwide sought to understand how to better prepare themselves for mass casualty incidents.
The guide is broken down into four sections: administration, physicians, nursing and support. Each section includes several subsections written by the department's staff that document their experiences and the lessons they learned during and after the shooting, as well as any operational or procedural changes the health system made as a result of the incident.
"The memories of the patients and family members they saw that night and during the months of recovery are forever etched in their minds," said Quibulah Graham, BSN, administrator of allied health and support services at Orlando Health. "It is something they would never want to experience again, but if they had to be called to action, they would undoubtedly be able to answer the call and perform."
