Seventy-eight healthcare professionals from several New York hospitals and health systems traveled to Puerto Rico Oct. 12 to assist medical professionals on the island and provide care to those who need it, according to Newsday.
The volunteer group includes practitioners from New York City-based NewYork-Presbyterian, Bronx, N.Y.-based Montefiore Medical Center and Albany (N.Y.) Medical Center, among others, the report states.
Mark Solazzo, executive vice president and COO of New Hyde Park, N.Y.-based Northwell Health, said in a press release 27 of the 70 volunteers will be from Northwell.
The trip will last roughly 15 to 17 days. During that time, the volunteer group will help set up a federal medical station in Ponce or Bayamon, and will provide care for patients suffering from "the entire gamut" of illnesses, including those with acute or chronic conditions.
"Our employees' response to this call for help was extraordinary," said Michael Dowling, president and CEO of Northwell Health, in a press release. "Just like they do every day in responding to the needs of their patients, our employees demonstrated incredible caring and commitment to helping the people of Puerto Rico recover from one of the worst natural disasters in its history."
