MountainView Hospital, University of Nevada to Develop GME Program

Las Vegas-based MountainView Hospital and the University of Nevada School of Medicine in Las Vegas have agreed to develop an expanded graduate medical education program to increase the number of physicians in the area.

The residency program, which will have 150 residency slots, could be up and running as soon as July 2016. Preliminary discussions have focused on GME programs for internal medicine, family medicine, geriatrics, general surgery, urology, neurology and some subspecialties.

"We want to help grow the pipeline of new physicians, and we want them to stay in our community," said Chris Mowan, CEO of MountainView Hospital, in a news release. "Offering medical students more options for their residency will keep more physicians in Nevada and assist as we continue to elevate patient care in our community."

Southern Nevada currently has 233 GME positions. This program would take that number to 380 or more.

"This partnership…is particularly notable because private hospitals have not traditionally affiliated with medical schools for large residency training programs," said Thomas L. Schwenk, MD, dean of the University of Nevada School of Medicine, in the release. "This affiliation could lead to 50 to 60 residency and fellowship graduates each year who have a high likelihood of staying in southern Nevada and enhancing its health and healthcare."

A final affiliation agreement between the hospital and the university is expected to be completed before the end of this year.
