The extracorporeal membrane oxygenation team at Asheville, N.C.-based Mission Hospital is the recipient of the North Carolina Healthcare Association's Healthcare Hero Award, the hospital said Jan. 24.
Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation has been used at Mission Hospital for some time, but has been most recently used to help COVID-19 patients. A spokesperson for the hospital told Becker's that patients who come to the hospital with about a 5 percent chance of survival have their chances increased to about 50 percent with the oxygenation.

"The entire care team at Mission Hospital has been outstanding through very challenging times, and I thank them for the compassionate care they deliver to our patients."
