Merger on the horizon for Mich. physician groups

Two major independent physician organizations in western Michigan are poised for a potential merger in 2017 under a clinically integrated network, according to a report from MiBiz.

The two Grand Rapids-based groups — Physicians' Organization of Western Michigan and West Michigan Physician Network — could reach an agreement this fall to merge into Answer Health, the CIN they helped create and support, according to the report. Khan Nedd, MD, Answer Health's interim CEO, told MiBiz physician employment trends and value-based care are creating the impetus to join forces under the CIN. He said he hopes Answer Health will be able to partner with Grand Rapids-based health systems such as Spectrum Health, Mercy Health and Metro Health.

Dr. Nedd estimates about 1,000 independent physicians practice in the area, and about 300 primary care physicians and specialists have already joined the group, according to the report.
