Lafayette (La.) General Medical Center has become a teaching hospital as of Monday after taking over University Medical Center, also in Lafayette, according to a report by The Advocate.
Lafayette General's takeover provides an extra site for resident training and increases the number of residents in the community by 18, according to the report. Residents will train at Lafayette General and UMC, now University Hospitals & Clinics.
To become a teaching hospital, Lafayette General contracted with 65 private physicians for $2 million. The physicians are faculty members at Baton Rouge-based Louisiana State University Health Science Center and will supervise the residents' training, according to the report. The hospital also started a surgical hospitalist program, which, according to The Advocate, is a best practice for graduate medical education.
Lafayette General took over management of UMC in June as part of LSU Health Care Services Division's massive privatization plan.
