Washington, D.C.-based Howard University Hospital's 263 resident physicians have voted to unionize and join the Committee of Interns and Residents, the largest physician union in the U.S.
The Howard residents filed to unionize in December to improve working conditions, patient care and have greater influence on hospital management, according to a statement.
Resident leaders believe unionization will help bring positive changes to help address the financial challenges the hospital has faced in the last few years, according to the statement.
Howard University Hospital did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
