Hospitals Buying Physicians: 12 Recent Transactions

The following transactions or developments between hospitals and physician groups took place within the past month, beginning with the most recent.

1. Southern Illinois Healthcare Foundation Acquires Weber Medical Clinic
Southern Illinois Healthcare Foundation, based in East St. Louis, Ill., acquired Weber Medical Clinic in Olney, Ill, in a deal that was completed March 5. SIHF does not plan to change the name of Weber Medical Clinic.

2. WellSpan Acquires Hanover Orthopaedic Associates in Pennsylvania
Hanover (Pa.) Orthopaedic Associates is joining York, Pa.-based WellSpan Medical Group, the physician organization of two-hospital WellSpan Health. The affiliation will go into effect May 31 and Hanover Orthopaedics will continue to provide services at its current office location.

3. Southcoast Health System Forms Integrated Physician Network
New Bedford, Mass.-based Southcoast Health System formed Southcoast Physicians Group, an integrated network of nearly 200 physicians and mid-level providers. The new group will merge physicians from Southcoast Physicians Services, a multispecialty group, and Southcoast Primary Care.

4. Columbus Community in Nebraska Purchases Orthopedic, Sports Medicine Clinic
Columbus (Neb.) Community Hospital acquired Columbus Orthopedic & Sports Medicine Clinic, effective March 1. The clinic, which performs roughly 500 surgical procedures per year, currently has two physicians.

5. MemorialCare in California Adds 400 Physicians, Acquires Management Company
Fountain Valley, Calif.-based MemorialCare Health System added 400 physicians to its ranks and acquired a physician management company. The system's affiliation with Greater Newport Physicians will add 140 primary care physicians and more than 250 specialists to MemorialCare Medical Foundation. The system's acquisition of Nautilus Healthcare Management Group will include more than 400 employees to manage practice support services.

6. WakeMed Acquires Urological Group in North Carolina
WakeMed Health & Hospitals, based in Raleigh, N.C., acquired Capital Urological Associates. Effective April 1, the group's three physicians and one physician assistant will join WakeMed's network. The practice will keep its current office.

7. Baptist Memorial Adds 12 More Cardiologists With Latest Memphis Acquisition
Stern Cardiovascular Foundation, the practice affiliated with Memphis-based Baptist Memorial Health Care, finalized its merger with Memphis Heart Clinic in late February. The merger makes Stern the largest cardiovascular group in Memphis with 35 cardiologists — the Heart Clinic bringing 12 of them.

8. Glens Falls Hospital, Adirondack Cardiology Associates to Merge

Glens Falls (N.Y.) Hospital has attracted Adirondack Cardiology Associates to join the hospital in a merger aimed at better coordinating cardiology care. The practice's 11 physicians and staff will be employed by the hospital; the practice will keep its current location in Queensbury, N.Y.

9. Cheyenne Medical Specialists Join Poudre Valley System in Colorado
The 11 providers with Cheyenne (Wyo.) Medical Specialists are joining Poudre Valley Medical Group, part of Fort Collins, Colo.-based Poudre Valley Health System. The agreement is expected to be finalized in April.

10. Advocate to Acquire MidAmerica Cardiovascular Consultants
Oak Brook, Ill.-based Advocate Medical Group, the physician arm of Advocate Health Care, agreed to acquire Oak Lawn, Ill.-based MidAmerica Cardiovascular Consultants for $3.5 million. Advocate has agreed to employ the group's 23 physicians under five-year agreements.

11. Douglas County Hospital in Minnesota May Acquire Alexandria Clinic
Douglas County Hospital in Alexandria, Minn., started negotiations to acquire Alexandria Clinic, a multi-specialty clinic with locations in Alexandria and Osakis, Minn.

12. Steward Lures Physicians From Tufts Medical Center
Boston-based Steward Health Care has added 20 more physicians to its roster through an affiliation with Manet Community Center in Quincy, Mass. Prior to this deal, the physicians were affiliated with Tufts Medical Center's New England Quality Care Alliance.
