A New York trauma surgeon was found stabbed to death in his apartment Sunday afternoon. His 11-year-old daughter discovered his body, according to the New York Daily News.
Police found Dean G. Lorich, MD, fatally stabbed with a knife in his chest near his heart around 1 p.m. Sunday. He was the associate director of the orthopedic trauma service at Hospital for Special Surgery and NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, and a professor of orthopedic surgery at Weill Cornell Medicine, all in New York City.
Authorities are reportedly treating Dr. Lorich's death as an apparent suicide, as there were no signs of forced entry at his apartment. A police source said Dr. Lorich, 54, was "under some personal stress," according to the report.
One of his three daughters, who was home with Dr. Lorich at the time, discovered her father's body and alerted the building's doorman, who called the police. Police said the call they received was regarding an assault, the report states.
Dr. Lorich's wife was reportedly playing tennis at the time of the incident.
One of Dr. Lorich's colleagues also reportedly stopped by his apartment and spoke to the doorman. She declined to give her name, according to the report.
"We were informed on Sunday, December 10, 2017 by the New York Police Department that our respected colleague Dr. Dean Lorich was found dead. Dr. Lorich was a distinguished orthopedic trauma surgeon and teacher serving at Hospital for Special Surgery, NewYork-Presbyterian and Weill Cornell Medicine. We mourn this tragic development and extend our deepest sympathies to Dr. Lorich's family, friends and patients," a spokesperson for the Hospital for Special Surgery said in a statement to Becker's Hospital Review.
