In a move likely to upset its competitor UPMC, insurer Highmark is actively seeking physicians to affiliate with its recent acquisition, West Penn Allegheny Health System in Pittsburgh, according to a Pittsburgh Tribune-Review report.
The Pittsburgh health insurance giant had private meetings with physicians from community-based healthcare systems in a county east of Allegheny County, where the city of Pittsburgh is located, to discuss affiliations and acquisition opportunities even before the West Penn Allegheny Health System deal is approved, according to the Tribune-Review. The push to recruit medical professionals in counties outside of Allegheny illustrates recent and growing tension between Highmark and UPMC.
Highmark acquired West Penn Allegheny Health System last year and awaits state approval of the acquisition before moving forward. The Pennsylvania Insurance Department will hold a public hearing April 17 on Highmark.
