Highmark and West Penn Allegheny Health System in Pittsburgh have poached a group of five obstetricians and gynecologists previously affiliated with the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, according to a report by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
When the five physicians gave UPMC their six-month notice, as required by their contracts, UPMC revoked their hospital privileges, according to the report. The physicians are on administrative leave until the end of 2012, and will begin at Highmark on Jan. 1, according to the report.

According to the report, West Penn and Highmark have employed more than 100 physicians this year, with "only a few" coming from UPMC. On the other hand, UPMC has employed about 400 physicians, with "some" coming from West Penn/Highmark, according to the report.
