Gonzaga, U of Washington consider medical school partnership

Spokane, Wash.-based Gonzaga University and Seattle-based University of Washington may be planning a medical school in Spokane, according to KXLY.com.

The University of Washington already had roots in Spokane through the WWAMI Medical Education Program — the medical school for Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana and Idaho. It was hoping to develop its presence in the area until Pullman-based Washington State University announced its plan to open a medical school there.

So the University of Washington contacted Gonzaga in 2014 regarding a potential partnership. "Certainly it felt to me as though we needed to at least talk with them," said Gonzaga President Thayne McCulloh at the time. "At least explore what it is they have in mind and we are looking forward to [doing] that."

Leaders from Gonzaga and the University of Washington will make an announcement about the potential partnership Feb. 24.
