Florida physician killed in Tallahassee yoga studio shooting

A gunman walked into Hot Yoga Tallahassee (Fla.) Nov. 2 and fired a handgun without warning, killing two and injuring five others, according to NBC 2.

Here are four things to know:

1. Police said Scott Paul Beierle, 40, posed as a customer at the yoga studio and fired his gun, according to the report. The yoga students fought back, but two women were killed during the incident and five others were injured. Mr. Beierle fatally shot himself before police arrived.

2. Authorities said it is unclear why Mr. Beierle carried out the shooting, and investigators have not discovered any links between the suspected shooter and the victims or the yoga studio.

3. However, police discovered several videos posted to YouTube in 2014 that allegedly feature Mr. Beierle making misogynistic comments about women and ranting about the police, minorities and the Army, among other subjects, according to The New York Times.

4. The two women who were fatally shot were Maura Binkley, 21, and 61-year-old Nancy Van Vessem, MD. Dr. Van Vessem worked as an internist and CMO of Capital Health Plan, where she worked for more than 20 years. Both women were also part of the Tallahassee-based Florida State University community. Ms. Binkley was a student, while Dr. Van Vessem served as one of the first clerkship directors for internal medicine at the FSU College of Medicine, according to an email to the Tallahassee Democrat by medical school dean John Fogarty, MD.

"[Dr. Van Vessem] advocated every day for patient-centered care and was a vocal proponent of that approach to the way we teach our students. Dr. Van Vessem has been a strong and valuable member of the College of Medicine faculty from our earliest days, making countless contributions both directly with our students and behind the scenes in ways that few people knew about," Dr. Fogarty said.
