The Latrobe, Pa.-based Excela Health Family Medicine Residency Program, offered by Excela Latrobe Hospital, will increase the number of admitted physicians from 18 to 24.
The expansion will happen over three years as the three-year program starts accepting eight residents per class instead of six.
Expanding the residency program is expected to support the development of a patient-centered medical home model in the system's primary care practices, according to the Excela Health news release. The expansion coincides with the construction of a new ambulatory care center, which will house primary care practices as well as specialty physicians and diagnostic and rehabilitative services.
To date, 165 physicians have graduated from the program. The residency program is dually accredited and affiliated with Jefferson Medical Collage of Thomas Jefferson University, Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine.
