Dr. Joe Maurer, co-founder of 4-hospital Colorado system, dies at 103

Lawrence Eugene "Joe" Maurer, MD, co-founder of Boulder (Colo.) Medical Center, died Jan. 24. He was 103 years old, according to an obituary published in The Daily Camera.

Here are three things to know about Dr. Maurer.

1. Dr. Maurer, along with nine other physicians, co-founded Boulder Medical Center in 1949. The organization has since grown to include four hospitals, but remains a physician-owned institution.

2. He was born in 1914, and received his medical degree from the Indianapolis-based Indiana University School of Medicine in 1939.

3. A trained pediatrician, Dr. Maurer delivered more than 2,500 babies during his career, including his two children.
