Doximity's Residency Navigator sheds light on GME programs

Doximity, a professional networking site for physicians, announced Tuesday the launch of its second annual "Residency Navigator" tool that helps senior medical students compare and choose residency programs.

The navigator combines insights from more than 38,000 physicians, data on programs in 22 specialties and alumni career paths to offer a detailed view of what medical students can expect from each program.

Students are able to see alumni subspecialization rates, alumni practice setting, program reputation, gender balance, program culture and board pass rates, among other factors. Students also have access to satisfaction rates and anonymous reviews to help guide their decisions.

Based on the information in navigator, Doximity made note of the following trends in satisfaction rates of various residency programs.

  • More than 90 percent of physicians rated their satisfaction with their residency program a four out of five stars.
  • Female residents reported slightly less satisfaction (91 percent) than male residents (94 percent).
  • Across orthopedic surgery, general surgery and anesthesiology specialties, male residents also reported more satisfaction than female residents. Orthopedic surgery showed the greatest gap: 95.9 percent of males were satisfied, compared to 83.7 percent of females.
  • The highest satisfaction rates were recorded in Oregon, Vermont, Utah, Minnesota and North Carolina.
  • The lowest satisfaction rates were found in Oklahoma, South Dakota, Mississippi, Arkansas and Nevada.
