Cleveland Clinic and Ohio University's Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine have signed an affiliation agreement to develop a medical school extension located on Cleveland Clinic's South Pointe Hospital campus.
The extension is an effort to address a growing shortage of primary care physicians in Ohio. The first class of 32 medical school students at the South Pointe campus is scheduled to being July 2015.
Ohio University, based in Athens, will commit $36 million to support renovation to a building on the South Pointe Hospital campus as well as help fund added faculty, staff and operations for the medical school extension.
Cleveland Clinic will commit $13 million to help fund capital improvements and renovations and help with the medical school extension. Non-profit Brentwood Foundation will also invest $5 million to support the new extension campus and $6 million to fund graduate medical education.
