Cigna has reported improved quality and costs from its collaborative accountable care pilot initiatives, according to a Cigna news release.
Cigna is involved in 12 initiatives, which are based on the accountable care organization model. Its program at Lebanon, N.H.-based Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center has closed 10 percent more gaps in care overall than the market. Its gap closure in hypertension is 16 percent and in diabetes eight percent higher compared to the market.
Cigna's program at Phoenix-based Cigna Medical Group has reduced average annual costs per patient by $336. The Medical Group has reduced ambulatory surgery costs by 11 percent and increased preventive care visits by three percent overall.
Cigna expects to implement or be in the planning stages of an additional 18 programs by the end of the year.
