Swedish Covenant Hospital has formed a partnership with the second oldest medical school in the U.K., St. George's, University of London, which will bring international medical students to the Chicago-based hospital.
About 25 third- and fourth-year St. George's students will join SCH this month through the partnership. St. George's has an ongoing affiliation with the University of Nicosia in Cyprus, through which students complete their first two years of medical school in Cyprus. Now, those students can finish their final two years on SCH's campus.
Bruce McNulty, MD, SCH's chairman of emergency medicine, will lead the program and help the international students gain hands-on patient experience. All SCH physicians who serve as educators will go through an educational course to prepare them for the students.
"We are educating our leaders for tomorrow," said Derek Kelly, MD, vice president of clinical transformation at SCH, in a news release. "St. George's is a school with a long tradition of excellence. This program is a win-win situation for both institutions."
