The largest independent physician group in Indianapolis is refusing to sell to a hospital in hopes that accountable care will even the playing field for physician recruitment, according to an Indianapolis Business Journal report.
Ben Park, MD, CEO of Indianapolis' American Health Network, said hospitals' acquisitions of physicians has given them a new stream of revenue and more cash to recruit physicians. His group finds it difficult to match the pay hospitals offer physicians — one hospital offered $1 million per year in compensation to cardiac surgeons, according to the report.
Still, Dr. Park says accountable care is the "savior of primary care organizations and physician groups," since it will curtail hospitals' revenue and the amount of money with which they can lure physicians.
