25% of Hospital Execs "Not Familiar" With ACO Regulations

While close to 25 percent of healthcare executives are "not familiar" with the federal regulations for accountable care organizations, more than 90 percent say they are in the planning or development stages of the model, according to a survey from Beacon Partners.

More than 200 healthcare executives responded to Beacon Partners' "Accountable care Organization Readiness Study." Sixty-one percent of respondents said they are "somewhat familiar" with ACO federal regulations as currently proposed, while only 15 percent said they are "very familiar."

Despite the quarter of respondents who were unfamiliar with the model, 92 percent of respondents said they are in the planning/development phases of an ACO and 30 percent are already in the operational phase.

Forty-nine percent of respondents said hospital CEOs are the people responsible for ACO development, since they are forward-looking, visionary leaders. Only about one-third of respondents had created a department or executive role specifically for ACO oversight.
