Boston Bruins owner gives $30M to University of Buffalo's med school

The owner of the Boston Bruins and his family are giving $30 million to University of Buffalo's medical school, which will be named the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences.

The $30 million gift to the medical school will go toward student scholarships, creation of innovative education and research programs and construction of a state-of-the-art medical school in downtown Buffalo, which is scheduled for completion in 2017.

The latest gift from Jeremy and Margaret Jacobs and their family means the benefactors have given more than $50 million to the University of Buffalo (N.Y.). The family also funded scholarships, supported an MBA program in China and donated an architectural landmark, the Butler Mansion, to the school. Mr. Jacobs is chairman of the UB Council and formerly served as chair of the UB Foundation.

Mr. Jacobs owns and operates Delaware North, a global hospitality and food service business based in Buffalo. He has owned the NHL's Boston Bruins since 1975.
