AMA's $15M initiative to improve physician training: 5 things to know

The American Medical Association announced a $15 million competitive initiative on Oct. 30 aimed at improving residency training in the U.S.

Here are five things to know:

1. The AMA "Reimagining Residency" initiative aims to better align residency training with the evolving healthcare landscape and workforce, according to a news release.

2. As part of the grant, the AMA will provide $15 million over five years to fund eight innovations intended to ensure future physicians are prepared for and safely transition from medical school to residency.

3. U.S. graduate medical education sponsors, health systems, medical schools and medical specialty societies are invited to apply for grant funding and must submit letters of intent describing their initiatives between Jan. 3 and Feb. 1. The AMA will then invite select participants to submit full proposals by April 17. The organization expects to announce the grant funding recipients during its annual meeting in June 2019.

4. The eight institutions will then meet to create standardized criteria for student assessment, resident selection procedures and transition, and core curriculum and evaluation procedures, among other characteristics.

5. The initiative builds on the AMA's previous work to create medical schools of the future. The new partners will work with the organization's existing consortium of 32 medical schools to devise new standards and procedures.
