AHA: 1 in 10 Hospitals Plan to Join an ACO

The American Hospital Association's Hospitals in Pursuit of Excellence initiative released a report on hospital readiness for population-based accountable care, which presents findings from a 2011 national survey of hospitals.

Among the findings in the report:
  • Hospitals expect their revenue sources from risk-based financial reimbursements to double over the next two years.
  • A majority of hospitals are engaged in coordinated care efforts.
  • A small percentage of hospitals surveyed — 3 percent — already participate in an accountable care organization.
  • One out of every 10 hospitals has immediate plans to participate in an ACO.

Also, the study found significant gaps in care coordination functionalities as well as different perceived barriers between hospitals preparing for an ACO and those already in one. Hospitals already in an ACO said their greatest challenge was reducing clinical variation and costs; hospitals preparing to participate in an ACO said their greatest challenge was increasing the size of the patient population covered by the organization.

Thirty-four percent of hospitals nationwide responded to the survey questions, which was sent to every hospital in the nation.
