The number of primary care physicians employed by hospitals increased from 10 percent in 2013 to 20 percent in 2014, according to a Jackson Healthcare survey of physicians.
Overall, 21 percent of physicians in all specialties are employed by a hospital.
Here is further breakdown of physicians' employment and ownership status:
• Solo practice owner: 21 percent
• Ownership stake in a single-specialty practice: 17 percent
• Single or multi-specialty practice owned by a hospital or health system: 14 percent
• Employed by a privately owned practice: 14 percent
• Independent contractor or locum tenens: 9 percent
• Ownership stake in a multi-specialty practice: 4 percent
Survey data is based on responses from 1,527 physicians gathered between April 18 and June 5.
